The word monolith has come from the original Greek word “Monolithos” which is made from two words mono means single and lithos pertains to stone. Thus Monoliths are features formed naturally by single stone, or massive rock. Geologists often use a term inselberg which literally means an Island Mountain, which pertains to the isolated hill or a single mountain rising above the surrounding area. - Rock of Gibraltar
The Rock of Gibraltar is 1396 feet high limestone monolith. The Rock of Gibraltar is located on the southern coast of Spain at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea, it is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Gibraltar was one of the pillars of the Legend Hercules as per the Greek mythology. This monolith is inhabited by the Gibraltarians and the Barbary macaques, the only primates in the European continent.
- Devils Tower
Devils Tower is the massive monolith created through volcano eruption in the ancient era. The devils Tower is located in the Black Hills in Crook County, in 1906 it was declared as United States National Monument, by President Roosevelt of U.S.A. The Monolith stands 1267 feet above the surrounding ground level. This mountain became world famous in 1977 due to the fact that this served as the location of the shooting of Oscar winning film Close Encounters of the Third Kind by Steven Spielberg.
Sigiriya is in Sri Lanka and forms one of the main tourist attractions. Similar to the Devils Tower Sigiriya rock is also formed through volcanic eruption. The Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro is also known in Portuguese as Pao de Acucar is situated on the peninsula that stretches into the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain is 1299 feet above sea level, and is the most popular tourist destination in Rio de Janeiro. There is a cable car facility to carry the visitors to the peak of this Sugarloaf Mountain from where one can take a panoramic view of Copacabana and admire the other beaches.
- Zuma Rock
Zuma rock lies to the north of the capital of Nigeria, Abuja. The Zuma rock is easily visible as one drives on the main road from Abuja to Kaduna. The Zuma Rock is twice the height of most of the other monoliths. The height of Zuma rock is a massive 2378 feet above the surrounding terrain. According to some observers there is human face identifiable in the white part at the center of this rock.

Uluru Rock or the Ayers Rock is the most popular landmark in Australia, located around 335 Km. from Alice springs, the nearest large town. This is the largest monolith in the world, and the world famous sandstone formation stands 1142 feet high and almost 9.4-KM in circumference. The rock exhibits exotic color changes, there are dramatic color changes, assuming flaming red in the morning during sunrise and looks blue or violet at sunset.
