The Great Buddha of Kamakura is one of the known and biggest bronze statue in Japan, situated in Kamakura city. The Bronze statue is seated calmly, the land is also considered as Pure Land Sect and is one of the greatest icons of Japan. With a height of 13.35-meters high, it has become second tallest bronze statue in Japan.

To get deep in the history, the statue is dated from 1252, and originally situated inside the large temple hall. The main temple was destroyed by typhoons, tidal waves several times during 14th and 15th centuries. After 1495, the Buddha has been placed in the open air.

Daibutsu – Amida Buddha

The Buddha statue is settled in lotus position, while his hands forming Dhyani Mudra. The Dhyani Mudra is a meditation position with gestures too of meditation. The serene backdrop makes the sight more beautiful. The Daibutsu – Amida Buddha depicts Pure Land of Buddhism. Buddhism originated in India, but later the sect gained more prominence in Japan by the 12th Century. The statue is popular and also considered as a great tourist destination. Expressing your mind through pure thoughts and sincerity from the whole heart, one can go to the Pure Land, which is also known as Western Paradise.

How to Reach?

The Great Buddha is about 5-10 minutes of walking distance from the Hase Station. It can also be reached from Kamakura along the Enoden Railway line. The Enoden is a seat-car like train, which connects Fujisawa and Enoshima. It is one of the terminal station located next to the JR Kamakura Station.
