The Lake Como is situated in Como province of Lombardy in Northern Italy, a part of Italian Lake district. The lake lies between Milan about 40 Km. away and the border of Switzerland. The Lake is a strong tourist attraction for more than a century due to the lovely surrounding, fresh air, water and good weather. This lake is of glacier origin and is the third largest lake in Italy. The lake has an area of 146 Sq. km. with surface elevation of 650ft, its length being 46Km. and the width of 4.5 Km. The lake is in the shape of inverted “ y “ with its one leg in Como In south-west and the other in Lecco in the south east, touching the cities Lombardy, Menaggio, Varenna ,Tremezzo,Griante,Nesso,Bellagio, Bellano, colico among others. The lake is fed mainly by the Adda River that enters the lake near Colico town and flows out of the lake at Lecco.

The weather here is mild, similar to Mediterranean climate; the lake helps to maintain higher temperature in the area during winter. The average temperature ranges between 2-degree Centigrade in January to 30 degrees centigrade in the month of July. Snowfall is erratic and affects only higher hills and mountains. There is heavy rainfall in May the highest and lowest during winter.
There are plenty of resorts and hotels for stay. Most of the rich and wealthy personalities have their villas along the lakeside. The lake is very easily accessible and the travel is very easy. The lake is on the Milan to Switzerland train route; there is a halt at Como town though there are total three stations associated with Como, the Como San Giovanni. Como Nord Lago and Como Nord Borghi. There is also a small train line that runs between Milan and Como. The Milan airport is 40 miles away and there is train journey possible to the airport. Ferry service is available that links major villages and the towns of lake Como. The other destinations of tourist interest are Isola Comacina. The Villa Carlotta situated in Tremezzo that has impressive gardens. There is also a Golf club at Menaggio just a few km away inland from Menaggio. Saturday is the market day for Como while that in Lenno is Tuesday.
