Udaipur the city of lakes is one amongst the most beautiful and romantic cities of India. Udaipur is a city governed by Municipal Corporation and is the capital of the Udaipur district in the state of Rajasthan in the western part of India. It is often termed as the city of dawn. Udaipur is spread on 64 Sq. km area having lovely land with huge lakes and surrounded by the lush hills of Aravalis. Udaipur was the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Mewar. The place is a popular tourist attraction for both the domestic and foreign visitors, due to lakes and palaces, temples, lovely gardens that sing the stories of the rich Indian culture of yesteryear. It has also proved to be an interesting location for the film makers.
Udaipur was the capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar; this was ruled by the Sisodiya dynasty who ruled for 1200 years.. The city was founded in the year 1559, the founder being Rana Udai Singh and hence the name Udaipur. He was the father of the famous warrior Maharana Pratap. The earlier capital of Mewar was Nagda, but in the year 1568 Mughal emperor Akbar conquered Chittorgarh and Rana Udai Singh shifted his capital to Udaipur near his residence. In the reign of British this became the princely state in 1818. And after independence in 1947 Mewar was integrated into India’s Rajasthan state.
The city of Udaipur has three interconnected lakes the Fath Sagar Lake, Lake Pichhola and the smaller lake Swaroop sagar Lake. The place speaks of bravery and chavalry and valor. The city of Udaipur is well connected with most of the major cities in India and is easily accessible from most of these cities, main amongst them being Delhi (670 Km.), Mumbai (739 Km.), Agra (630Km.) Jaipur (405 Km.), the capital of state of Rajasthan and Ahmedabad. The climate of the city is tropical. During summer the temperature rises to maximum of 42.3 degree Celsius to minimum 28.8 degree Celsius. While in winter the temperature dips as low as 2.5 degree Celsius, and the best time to visit the place is winter that is between September to March. The city can be reached by air, train or road from most of these cities.
As the city of Udaipur was the capital of kingdom the city has a number of palaces and the palace is always a center of attraction for the tourists, particularly those from foreign countries. The city of Udaipur stands on the banks of Lake Pichhola, and the reflection of the white marble palaces in the water is an enticing view. Exquisite Lake Palace in the Lake Pichhola is splendid sight to watch. Initially the city had eleven gates only five of them are still existent, the Sun gate or Surajpole is the main entrance to the city. Besides the number of palaces in the city there are other attractions as well such as Jagdish temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Saheliyon ki badi meaning garden of the maids is also a tourist spot thronged by many visitors.
There is Nehru Garden a park made in the middle of Fateh Sagar Lake, covering around 41 acres of land covering the flower garden. The garden has view of the Aravalli hills on its three side and the ancient Moti mahal , palace of Maharana Pratap himself. There is a sunset point at Dudh Talai a rock and fountain garden.
There are plenty of other places of historic and tourist interest around Udaipur, Nathdwara temple of Lord Krishna, Eklingji a Mahadev temple and the forts namely Kumbhalgarh and Chittaurgarh to name few.
