Assisi is an Umbrian small town, which is located 12-miles from east of Perugia with elevated land of 1,200-feet. Assisi is popularly known as birthplace of St Francis of Assisi. St Francis is the patron Saint of Assisi and also founder of the Franciscan order. He was one of the most powerful Catholic Saint of that period. Today, Assisi is one of the main attraction of 13-century Basilica Di San Francesco.

The Assisi Pilgrimage Site contain sacred relics of Francis and holy frescoes of his life. There are more 7-other churches which are worth visiting, and reflect the beautiful history and connection with Francis and his friend Clare. Assisi has around 3,000- inhabitants. It is a medieval town in Italy with most beloved two saints named St Francis and St Clare. They both were born in 12-century, as a child of wealthy and privilege parents, who gave up all luxuries to devote themselves to prayer and austerity. Saint Francis was one who founded the Franciscans in 1208, and St Clare formed an order which came to known as a Poor Clares in the year 1212. The main site holds several masterpieces of medieval art and ancient relics.

Saint Clare influenced his friend St Francis. Saint Clare is buried in Assisi in Basilica, named in her honour. The view around the pilgrim site is also spectacular at Umbrian countryside. In 2000, the site was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other Attractions

The town has two known medieval castles. The larger is known as ‘Rocca Maggiore’, it has massive presence which is meant to intimidate people of the town. Cardinal Albornoz built the pilgrimage site which was then expanded by Popes Pius II and Paul III.

The Amphitheatre, which was built in the 1st century AD, is elliptical plan with medieval houses around it, it has an arch travertine Cunei. The area has garden around. Communal Square, Palace of Priors and People’s tower are also attraction to visit. The famous fountain with three lions dates back from the 16th century.

It has rich art tradition with number of well-known artistic work. Known Artist like Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti worked together on Assisi. The site has 1317 fresco of Simone Martini with brilliant combination of colour shades.
